The world of compliance moves fast, and new regulations emerge monthly. It’s important to keep your ear to the ground to see whatever changes are coming. And, seeing other people’s approaches—both from the regulatory side and from the credit union side—can provide much needed perspectives.
But how can credit unions stay up to date on the latest rules, statutes, regulations, etc.? These five blogs will help you stay on top of the changing world of credit union compliance.
1. The Institute of Internal Auditors Blog
The IIA is one of my go-to publications on all things audit-related. Whereas many of the blogs on this list touch on audit-related concerns, this blog is dedicated specifically to the issues that internal auditors face daily.
Furthermore, they produce additional publications in their bookstore, periodicals, Internal Auditor magazine, and their newsletters.
2. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Blog
The CFPB blog used to update very frequently. That's no longer the case. However, there's still a lot of knowledge in there, and it should remain relevant for a while still, even if it's no longer timely.
In addition to news and opinion, some of the material may help credit union auditors set priorities and set expectations.
3. The Audit Library Blog
The Audit Library was founded by Olivia Whipple, CIA, and John Kaneklides, CIA. They have around 30 years of combined financial institution and audit industry experience. (That includes internal audit, external audit, and consultant roles.)
While the content isn’t geared specifically towards credit unions, it’s filled to the brim with valuable insight, useful resources, and great stories. I absolutely recommend visiting their blog, checking out the rest of their site, and adding it to your favorites.
4. America's Credit Unions Compliance Blog
America's Credit Unions—formerly NAFCU and CUNA—runs its own compliance blog. America's Credit Unions has a vested interest in seeing credit unions succeed, and they prove it with every nuanced blog post.
The issues they write about—and the depth with which they cover them—are phenomenal. You can catch it all here.
5. NCUA News
NCUA doesn’t actually run a blog, which is too bad. However, they do update their site often, and their "news" section in particular is filled with current insights and clarifications about specific rules.
They maintain a list of good credit union compliance resources, which may help with some questions. But they also keep current with press releases, statements, newsletters, and more in their news section. It’s not a blog, but it may serve the same function.
